For as long as I can remember, my hands have been busy. Whether drawing, sewing, or trying something new, I've been creating things all my life.
Since 1989, I have researched and recreated historically accurate full-size garments from the 15th century through World War II as a living historian. My interest is not in the politics or famous faces of an era, but rather how people from all levels of society lived throughout history.
My first figure was completed in 1990 without any formal training. I had seen an art doll that I wanted but could not afford. I thought, "Well, I can just make one." And I did - never imagining where it would eventually lead me.
I feel fortunate that I’m now able to share my passion for history and historical fashions through my hobby as a living historian and as a professional artist. Thank you for your interest.

About the Figures
Each miniature historical fashion figure is entirely handmade by the artist, Susan Parris, from the inside out. Faces, hands, arms and shoe lasts are individually hand sculpted. The features are finished with a unique paint and glaze technique developed by the artist, creating a lifelike finish. The sculpted pieces are then attached to a soft linen body over a wire armature.
Inspiration is drawn from period paintings as well as extant full size garments and 18th century Queen Anne style wooden dolls. Extensive historical research by the artist ensures that all the details are as historically accurate as possible to a specific year.
Each miniature couture garment is constructed just like original full-size garments. Working in the same manner as an 18th century mantua-maker, the artist drapes panels of fabric on each figure to create a perfect fit without the use of a pattern. All sewing is done by hand and only high quality natural and vintage materials that best represent historical fabrics are used. All accessories, wigs, shoes, hats, and caps are custom made for each figure by Susan. Garments are not removable unless noted in the description.
Unique antique accessories, such as the 19th century toy sleigh with No. 33 and the 19th century scissors worn by No. 37, are often incorporated.
Figures 9" and taller start at $1,500. Figures 4" and smaller start at $300. Please contact the artist for additional information.
