No. 17 This figure presents the wide panniers court fashions worn
throughout the 18th century. The English-back gown was made from a 19th century
wool christening gown that had been hand embroidered with silk thread. It is an
exquisite fabric that can never be duplicated. It was carefully cut and sewn to
represent the intricate embroideries found in original court fashions of the

No. 28 Inspired by an early 19th century wooden doll in the Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art collection, this figure's hair was sculpted with a comb tucked in the knot at back. She wears a plaid silk taffeta gown in the Empire style with a long silk taffeta sash and vintage lace trim. Underneath she has on white linen pantalets with embroidered trim and a white linen petticoat with a corded hem - a common feature of the period to provide ease of movement and to give shape at the hem to gowns made of light weight fabrics. The black slippers and white stockings are painted. Brass earrings and brown glass eyes complete this authentic tuck comb style doll. Walnut wood base. Custom canvas storage box. No. 34 This stunning figure was inspired by an original wooden in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and was featured on the cover of Doll Crafter & Costuming magazine (March 2007). The trained Robe A La Francaise (sack back) gown and matching petticoat are made of silk taffeta. Each is adorned with an antique ribbon-rose trim purchased by the artist in a Paris flea market. The small flowerlike decoration was created by the artist from individual twisted silver wire pieces. The scalloped edging was cut one-at-a-time after the gown had been fitted to the doll and sewn. This decorative edging was created exactly as it was done in the 18th century with an iron pinking tool and a mallet. The figure wears a full set of underpinnings under the gown including pale blue linen stockings, silk garters, vintage lace shift, canvas stays, linen petticoat, linen panniers edged with vintage trim, an embroidered kid pocket and a cream silk petticoat. The slippers (mules) are embroidered kid and match the pocket. The delicate cap is made of vintage cotton and lace with silk bows and is worn over a wig fashioned in mohair. The stomacher is created from a piece of textured vintage cotton. Vintage lace also adorns the neckline and creates the large engageantes (flounces) at the cuffs. The antique (late 19th century) gold watch has a fine chain and a raised design on the back. The necklace is made of turquoise beads. The figure's antique black glass eyes are pupiless like the original 18th century doll that inspired it. |

No. 35 This one-of-a-kind figure was inspired by the commercially dressed wooden dolls of the 18th century with the exaggerated patchwork pannier gown, simple bodice and the small triangular piece in front that may have represented an apron or pocket. The gown is made of silk taffeta and silk brocade fabrics that have been pieced together and lined with silk. The edges of the pocket and gown are trimmed with a vintage silver metallic braid. This figure does not wear any underpinnings just like the originals. However, it does have fine kid shoes and tied garters over her natural linen legs. The fischu (scarf) is created from vintage embroidered cotton and lace. The stylish cap is also fashioned in vintage embroidered cotton and lace lappets (streamers). The black antique glass eyes are pupiless like those found on original 18th century wooden dolls. The wig is fashioned in layers of plaited tow (flax) which was also common on this type of original doll. |
